• L'escadre, renforcée à Dakar par le croiseur Primauguet, venait d'appareiller et se dirigeait à toute vitesse vers le sud. Un destroyer anglais, détaché en surveillance, en gardait, de loin, le contact.

Rem. GRUSS 1952 et ROB. attestent l'emploi du terme pour désigner, depuis 1941, un avion de combat à grand rayon d'action (en ce sens QUILLET 1965 signale uniquement l'expr. avion destroyer).
Prononc. :[] à l'angl. ou [] à la fr. D'apr. DUPRÉ 1972, p. 674 c'est cette 2e transcr. qui est la plus employée Étymol. et Hist. 1893 (CRONEAU, Rev. générale des sciences, IV, p. 63 ds MACK. t. 1, p. 250). Angl. destroyer (dér. avec suff. -er du verbe to destroy « détruire ») attesté dep. 1894, qui selon NED Suppl. fut à l'origine le nom propre d'un torpilleur américain (1882) et qui caractérisa par la suite certains torpilleurs (torpedo-boat(-)destroyer 1893, également torpedo[boat]-catcher) pour devenir le nom générique de ce type de bateau de guerre.
